WHO’S THE COURSE FOR?

The Emergency Response Team Member training programme is for personnel who are appointed to, or to be appointed to, the role of an H2S Emergency Response Team Member/Leader.

COURSE AIMS AND BENEFITS:

To equip the participant with the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to perform the role of H2S Emergency Response Team Member/Leader effectively.

COURSE CONTENT:

1. The Characteristics and Behavior of Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S)
2. The role of the Emergency Response Team Member/Leader.
3. Leading the response to an incident.
4. Teamwork and communication.
5. Refresh on the Working Duration Breathing Apparatus Element.
6. Incident Response Element.
7. Search and Rescue Element.
8. Practical exercises on rescue from toxic environments, rescue at height and confined space.

Participant must be able to know and understand:

• The theory of Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S)
• The role and key responsibilities of the Emergency Response Team Member/Leader.
• Typical communication hierarchy and processes used during an incident.
• Typical communication methods and their limitations.
• Typical Emergency Response team mobilisation procedures.
• The key elements included in an incident brief and debrief.
• Rescue from an H2S enriched area.

Participant (Member) must be able to demonstrate:

• Breathing apparatus control board procedures.
•  How to identify and don the appropriate emergency response PPE required for the Emergency Response Team Member (ERTM).
• The operation, donning and wearer checks of the working duration of the breathing apparatus.
• Participation as an Emergency Response Team Member (ERTM) in an incident under the direction of the Emergency Response Team Leader (ERTL) following safe working practices and procedures.
• Effective communication with the Emergency Response Team Leader (ERTL) and Emergency Response Team Member (ERTM) during an incident.
• The key considerations and actions while entering and working in the incident area.
• Correct search and rescue procedures and techniques.
• Effect a rescue at height with restricted access or area.
• Effect a rescue from a confined space.
• Effect a rescue from a toxic environment.
• The correct steps are involved in initial casualty assessment and recovery.
• Participation in an incident brief and debrief.

Participant (Leader) must be able to demonstrate:

• Delegating tasks to the Emergency Response Team effectively.
• Communicating effectively with relevant emergency response personnel.
• Giving clear and concise instructions to the Emergency Response Team members during the emergency.
• Leading the Emergency Response Team in a clear and confident manner.
• When it is safe to do so, direct the Emergency Response Team members into the incident area, continually assessing how the changes in the emergency could impact the safety of the Emergency Response Team members.
• Conducting dynamic risk assessments throughout the incident.
• Looking for and responding accordingly to signs of stress in individual Emergency Response Team members during the emergency.
• Effectively monitoring breathing apparatus (BA) control.
• Leading the Emergency Response Team during rescue operations effectively.
• Conducting missing persons and casualty management effectively during the emergency.
