COURSE CONTENT:

This course covers elements of National Competency PUAVEH001 Drive Vehicles Under Operational Conditions


Through structured information and practical sessions, the following areas will be covered:

  • Definition of emergency vehicles
  • Road traffic code and legislation.
  • Legal responsibilities.
  • The additional risks associated with operating emergency vehicles.
  • Importance of arriving safely.
  • When to use operational conditions.
  • Reasonable care.
  • Fitness to drive and factors that can affect this.
  • Vehicle preparation and vehicle safety.
  • Pre-drive vehicle inspections.
  • Seating position and cabin safety.
  • Tyre safety and inflation Speed and momentum.
  • Braking systems.
  • Safety cushions.
  • Employing a “system of car control” to prevent loss of control.
  • Safe overtaking.
  • Safe towing


COURSE OUTCOMES:

  • Understand the risks when operating emergency vehicles
  • Understand the road traffic code and legal responsibilities
  • Understand the importance of correct tyre pressures and the effect on safety, tyre life and fuel efficiency.
  • Understand the importance of seat belts, along with the securing of loads and the dangers of loose items.
  • Understand the factors that can affect “fitness to drive”.
  • Through practical driving manoeuvres develop an awareness of stopping distances and speed. Particularly how the degree of difficulty increases exponentially in relation to actual speed.
  • Develop ways to predict potential hazards, identify risk situations and minimise danger. Understand the importance of drivers keeping their vision up and maintaining “safety cushions”.
  • Understand that there are strategies to combat frustration and impatience when driving.
  • Through practical driving manoeuvres develop skills and knowledge in operating emergency vehicles in a range of situations.
