AIMS & OBJECTIVES:
The aim of this module is to provide the delegates, the necessary knowledge & skills required for the proper use and pre - operational inspection of overhead bridge cranes.
Learning Outcomes:
To successfully complete this module, delegates are required to meet all the specified learning outcome listed below:
• LOLER requirements for bridge cranes
• Differences between single girder & double girder cranes
• Differences between top running & under running cranes
• Operation of bridge crane main components
• Bridge crane operating precautions
• Responsibilities for ensuring safe lifting operations
• Bridge crane inspection requirements
• The need for risk assessments & lifting plans
• The necessary actions in preparation for lifting
• Pre - operation inspection of bridge cranes
• Basic hitches used in lifting operations
• How sling angles affect sling capacities
• Calculating weights of loads
• Pre - use inspections of lifting equipment
• Correctly prepare load placement area
• Operating a bridge crane in a safe and controlled manner to lift, move and lower loads
• Shutting down the crane and carrying out post operation inspections.
PERFORMANCE EVALUATION:
Delegates attending the Overhead Bridge Crane Operator training shall be given a series of explanations and demonstrations.
On completion of the module, delegates shall be given a theory questionnaire to assess their understanding of the knowledge elements specified in the learning outcomes. The assessment is an open book and a pass mark of 80% must be attained.
Delegates shall also undergo a practical assessment which requires them to demonstrate that they have retained and understood the information covered in the theoretical portion of the module by participating in a practical assessment which includes: conducting pre - use inspections, slinging / rigging up loads, checking set - up, raising, moving and lowering loads.
