COURSE CODE: MH-56
AIMS & OBJECTIVES:
To establish that the delegate has the required responsibilities, knowledge, understanding and operational skills to fulfil the role of Crane operator in line with BSJV Lifting & Hoisting Control Procedures/ Standards safely and effectively
To assess the delegate’s skill and knowledge for safe operation of the category/ class of crane prior to working on BSJV’s worksites and locations with it has prevailing influences.
Learning Outcomes:
Successfully complete this training, delegate must be able to explain:
Introduction to Mobile Crane Operation in BSJV’s sites (Knowledge)
• The requirements of the BSJV Lifting & Hoisting Standards/ Procedures
• The roles and responsibilities of the typical Lifting Crew and the reporting structure (most emphasis in the Crane Operator’s Role)
• The importance and the difference of Lift Classifications (Routine Lifts vs Non- Routine Lifts) within BLNG & BSP
• Why mobile cranes have to be set up with fully extended outriggers and supported with appropriate outrigger pads/mats
• What are the BSJV requirements for outrigger pads/ matting, restricted areas for outriggers and crawler tracks
• What are the BSJV requirements in terms of allowable distance away from drains or any types of excavation; including outriggers away from cable trenches
• Lifting over live equipment; what are the risks? What are the requirements?
• BSJV recognized banksman hand signals
• The typical hazards associated with crane lifting operations
• The purpose of carrying out pre-use inspection of a crane
• The pre-use inspection criteria for mobile cranes
• The mandatory documentation to obtain prior to mobile crane operations
• Why it is important that all personnel involved in the lifting operation know and understand their duties and responsibilities
• What are the quality documentation required to be obtain prior to entering BSJV sites (specify Q-Pass in BLNG)?

Mobile Crane Operations (Practical Skills)
To successfully complete this training, delegate must be able to demonstrate:
• The Pre-start and pre-operational checks
• Crane maneuvering and positioning as plan
• Setting up the crane and levelling the crane with tyres off the ground
• Basic operation of the crane without load on the hoist to gain familiarization and confidence of the crane controls and functions
• Operating a crane to follow a planned load path avoiding obstacles (with and without load)
• Operating three crane control functions simultaneously [luff/jib, hoist and slew]
• where crane type has capability of simultaneous control function operation (with and without load)
• Correctly responding to banksman hand signals and radio instructions pertaining to a blind lift
• Changing the number of falls of rope on a hook block and terminal fittings
• Lifting, transferring and placing simple lift loads • Lifting, transferring and placing of non-routine loads such as bundled loads, load with eccentric COG, load with awkward shape/ size
• How to interpret information from crane rated capacity indicators and explain how they are used • Correctly placing the hook/ hoist over the load’s COG • Apply safe operating techniques, to include: slew/ swing control, height judgments and crane controls coordination
• How to correctly implement shutdown procedures and make the crane safe following a facility emergency alarm
