AIMS & OBJECTIVES: The aim of this module is to provide the delegates with an understanding of the role and responsibilities of the Person in Charge of all lifting operations. Learning Outcomes: To successfully complete this training, delegates must meet all the learning outcomes specified below: • Legislation, Safe Working Practices and Procedures (LOLER, PUWER, HASAWA, BS7121-1, BS7121-3 & BS7121-11, MHSWR), plus local regulations and requirements. • Lifting Categorization, Simple, Complicated, Complex/Critical: o Lifting Operations Roles & Responsibilities o Planning rigging operations o Determining communication requirements o Control of rigging operations o Leadership & management of rigging teams o Supervision and coaching of lift team members o Organization chain of command • Calculating Forces o Equipment / resources requirements o Calculating load weights and angles o Ground Bearing Capacity (GBC) o Ground Bearing Pressure (GBP) o Deck Loadings and Landing Areas o Forces applied during cross hauling o Tension applied on slings at different angles o Calculating the Centre of Gravity o Lifting equipment selection and integrity checks o Lifting points selection o Inspection of lifting equipment before and after task o The Importance of Risk Assessment & Toolbox Talks o Management of Rigging Lofts o The Planning of Lifting Operations • Practical Exercises include: o Carrying out a lifting operation risk assessment o Compiling a Lift Plan o Developing & delivering a toolbox talk o Selecting & inspecting lifting equipment and accessories PERFORMANCE EVALUATION: Delegates attending the Person in Charge training shall be given a series of explanations and demonstrations. At the end of the course delegates shall be given a theory questionnaire to assess their understanding of the knowledge elements specified in the learning outcomes. The assessment is open book and a pass mark of 80% must be attained. This module contains practical exercises in which the delegates must take an active part. Delegate performance in these practical exercises must be evaluated against the course content. CERTIFICATION: Delegates successfully meeting the Person in Charge Training requirements shall be awarded a BSJV Person in Charge Training Certificate, which indicates that the delegate has achieved the minimum level of training. Note: • This certificate DOES NOT imply competence in the Person in Charge role • Person in Charge delegate must attend PIC assessment within 12 months from the date of issue on his / her Person in Charge Training certificate.
