The aim of this module is to provide the delegates with the basic knowledge of activities associated with the combined roles, and the safety & regulatory requirements of those activities.

To successfully complete the Initial Training Programme, delegates must meet all the learning outcomes specified below:
Unit 1 ā Introduction to Lifting Operation
To successfully complete this module, delegates must be able to explain:
ā¢ Element 1.1 Relevant legislation and regulations related to rigging and lifting operations o Lifting Equipment and Lifting Operations Regulations ā relevant to the Banksman & Slinger role
o Documentation and regulations that apply to lifting activities
ļ® Why it is important to plan lifting activities
o Hazards associated with lifting operations and the appropriate control measures
ļ® The roles and duties of personnel in a lifting crew
o The basic principles of crane operations
o Common lifting appliances and lifting accessories
o The difference between SWL and WLL of lifting equipment
o Classification of lifts (i.e.) routine and non-routine (simple, complicated, complex)
o A typical permit-to-work system as it applies to lifting operations
o Lifting of personnel by crane for work and transfer purposes
o Weight identification and estimation of the load
o Deciding when tag lines need to be used and their safe use
o Planning, walking through and allowing for sufficient headroom along the route
o Determining the load bearing capabilities of the lay down area
o Conducting pre-use checks of lifting appliances and accessories
o Correct positioning of personnel involved in lifting operations
o Erecting signs and barriers or posting sentries
o Conducting post-use checks of lifting appliances and accessories
o Storage procedures for packing materials, lifting appliances and accessories
o The disposal of any waste in relation to legislation and procedures
Unit 2 ā The Banksman Role To successfully complete this module, delegates must be able to explain:
ā¢ Element 1.1 Relevant legislation and regulations related to rigging and lifting operations
o The importance of the Banksmanās role
o Checking the cargo manifest and reviewing the load
o Checking the load for dropped objects
o Checking the balance and security of the load
o Difficulties that might occur during the lifting and moving operations
o The need for high visibility vests
o The need for communicating hand signals clearly
o What is meant by āline of sightā and a āblind liftā
o The hand signal for āemergency stopā
o Establishing and using two-way radio communications
Unit 3 ā Slinging Operation To successfully complete this module, delegates must be able to explain:
o Different types of slings and sling identification markings
o Principles of sling angles and tensions
o Using appropriate lifting accessories
o Attaching slings to ensure a safe and even weight distribution
o Protecting slings from damage
o Securing the cargo within a container/half height using ratchet straps
o Unhooking and removing slings and disconnection of lifting equipment
Unit 4 ā Practical Exercise To successfully complete this module, delegates must demonstrate:
o The selection and use of correct PPE
o The use of hand signals and radio communications
o The Banksmanās role in a simple pre-slung lift
o How to prepare a standard load which requires a single leg sling
o How to prepare a standard load which requires more than one sling
o The slingerās role during a free access lift, a restricted access lift, a single tubular lift, a bundled tubular lift, a load with an offset center of gravity, a lift with a cargo carrying unit and a blind lift
o The Banksmanās role during a free access lift, a restricted access lift, a single tubular lift, a bundled tubular lift, a lift with an offset center of gravity, a lift with a cargo carrying unit and a blind lift varying the use of hand signals and radio communications.
PERFORMANCE EVALUATION: Delegates attending the Stage 1 training must be given a series of explanations and demonstrations. At the end of the course delegates shall be given a theory questionnaire to assess their understanding of the knowledge elements specified in the learning outcomes.
The assessment is open book and a pass mark of 80% must be attained. Module 3 contains practical exercises in which the delegates must take an active part. Delegatesā performance in these practical exercises will be evaluated against the learning outcomes.
Note: The Lift Plans and risk assessments prepared by the training provider for this training module must be reviewed and approved by the Competent Person of the training provider (Certified Banksman & Slinger Level II and Lift Planner).
LOOGBOOK: AIM OF LOGBOOK The aim of this log book is for the Banksman & Slinger Level I delegate to complete a series of supervised workplace tasks in order to gain relevant experience. The delegate must complete a log book record of the supervised banksman & slinger tasks. Delegates that complete the Banksman & Slinger Level I log book requirements within 12 months of successful completion of Banksman & Slinger Level 1 Training shall be eligible to undertake the next stage of the programme which is the Banksman & Slinger Level II Competence Assessment.
Note: If the log book has not been fully completed within 12 months, the delegate shall NOT be entitled to undertake the Banksman & Slinger Level II Competence Assessment, plus he / she must re - attend the Banksman & Slinger Level 1 Training module.
LOGBOOK REQUIREMENTS The Banksman & Slinger Level I work place experience log book shall be issued to the Banksman & Slinger Level I delegate by the Training Provider when he / she successfully completes Banksman & Slinger Level 1 Training module. The delegate must ensure that all the allocated activities are recorded in the log book and appropriate signatures are obtained. Signatories The delegate must ensure that after completing each banksman & slinger activity he / she obtains the signature of a competent banksman & slinger (i.e.) Level II certified.
The competent person directly supervising the delegate must be satisfied that each of the allocated activities specified in the log book has been completed in a safe manner before signing the log book. Note: Completion of the log book does not imply that the delegate is competent to carry out banksman & slinger activities unsupervised (i.e.) the delegate must successfully complete the next stage which is Banksman & Slinger Level II Competence Assessment
