Studying the NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) in Occupational Health and Safety


Who is the course for?

Because of the general nature of this qualification it is relevant to every workplace. The course has been developed with managers, supervisors and anybody with health and safety management responsibilities in mind.

Additionally, the IGC is the entry level qualification for those wishing to become Health and Safety Officers in Brunei Darussalam.


What will I learn?

The course is split into 2 parts (IG1 and IG2) with Week 1 concentrating on IG1 and Week 2 studying IG2.


IG1 concentrates on the management aspects of health and safety. This looks at:

• Why we manage health and safety

• Safety management systems

• Managing risk

• Monitoring and measuring our health and safety performance


IG2 focusses on the more practical aspects of health and safety looking at common workplace hazards such as Fire, Electricity, Vehicle movement, Hazardous substances etc.

How much time do I need to dedicate to my studies?

NEBOSH recommend the following amount of study be given to the IGC:

• Taught (classroom) hours: 65

• Private study: 40 (this will typically be made up of tutor set homework and self-guided study)

• Total hours: 105 plus time devoted to assessments.


Experience has shown that students devoting this amount of time to their studies are more likely to have a successful outcome.


How will I be assessed?

There are two assessments for this qualification:

• IG1 is assessed by an online Open Book Examination (OBE). This will be sat at a pre-determined date following the course.

• IG2 is assessed by a ‘practical’ submission based on a real workplace. This is carried out after the course.


Full details of the assessments will be given during the course with time put aside to fully brief students on the requirements of both assessments.

Pre-requisites: Candidates undertaking this qualification should reach a minimum standard of English equivalent to an International English Language Testing System score of 6.0 or higher in IELTS tests in order to be accepted onto NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) in Occupational Health and Safety programme.
